Fairbourne Floating coastal Park

2020

In order to cope with the increasing frequency of extreme sea level rise events in Fairbourne, I redesigned the settlement with an approach based on eco-tourism. The sea level rise gave me an opportunity to create a floating landscape located on the salt marsh. My design goal was to create an ecological wetland where people, birds and plants could coexist harmoniously. Therefore, it considers bird habitats and birdwatching, site seeing platforms, woodlands, a residential area and a tourist centre, a beach and an area to deal with the highest flood risk.

My name is Shuchen Zhang and I was born in Shayang County, Hubei Province, China. Since I was a child, I have been influenced by my parents who are architectural and landscape engineers.
I have always loved to paint and use my creativity. Led by this curiosity and natural fascination with art, I wanted to explore how to create a reasonable human habitat where people and nature can coexist harmoniously and develop sustainably. I want to pursue a career as a landscape designer.
